So now it is seven months post surgery. I am now wearing two solid total hip replacements by Zimmer. I am registering progress in movement, balance and quality of life. With my horse Cockpit, I have started work in hand instead of mounting too often. Issue is that walking at the side of a horse makes things more difficult as you need some coordination yourself while coordinating movements of your horse. If you've never done that before, as I never did. Frustration and challenge at the same time. I needed new challenges. But anyways, I mounted a new horse.
There is an explicit goal: learning and riding classic dressage. No competition.
My way to get there? Three days per week the gym. Pilates, Spinning and weights. May sound pretty easy, but the reality is: for Pilates, I really need to stretch some new muscles. In spinning, I gain endurance and coordination of the "new" muscles. At the beginning, I really had a hard time to speed up. The spinning bike is like the plastic horse: it does not fail or fall if you ride shit :-) :-) :-)
Extra work at the barn, naturally. Lifting hay bales and things like that? No longer a problem. It is hard to believe and hard to remember it's just seven months back that I really did not dare to believe I can move again. There are some little issues left to be fixed. I may have waited several years too long to get my second hip "fixed". I am confident though, that these little issues will disappear with further training. Lesson learned? Be patient. Set high goals for yourself and do not give up until you have reached them. It is important to live up to your own expectations.
